If you or your employees are tired of the American rat race — add a little Scandinavian hygge to your work space.

Mithun Agency recently included the Trisore 140 fireplace by Element4  in their new space in Minneapolis, MN.  Mithun’s reason for including this fireplace comes from the deep Scandinavian heritage of the agency.  Andrew Hokenson, Communications Director for Mithun, explained it this way:

“Mithun Advertising is proud of its Scandinavian culture.  We designed a new space that would encourage creativity and collaboration but also promoted what the Scandinavians call ‘hygge’ (pronounced ‘hooga’): a term that relates to coziness, togetherness and a feeling of well-being.”

A Space to Collaborate

Re-Imagining Space

If you can imagine, this cozy, hygge-filled space was once an old drafty elevator shaft and mechanical room, according to designer Kar-Keat Chong.  He hoped to re-invent a space where the employees could “break away” from the open office environment down below.  This is a place that offers a more casual and comfortable zone.  He said that the fireplace serves to anchor the space as a “central highlight and focal point.”

DYIers Insider Tip:

For all you DYIers out there wondering how Chong and his team got that seductive white-washed brick finish.  The bricks were painted, then sandblasted, and finally hit with a clear-coat finish to give the walls a look that is a little bit vintage, a little bit modern and all hygge.
